Osteoporosis is a common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)in the skeletal system,which is mainly manifested as decreased bone mass and destruction of bone structure.The elderly patients with T2DM complicated with osteoporosis are related to many factors.Existing researches indicate that the increased risk of osteopo-rosis is primarily related to aging,decreased sex hormones,long-term hyperglycemia,insulin deficiency,reduced IGF-1,long-term hyperlipidemia,increased inflammatory cytokines,low BMI,diabetic microangiopathy and certain hypoglycemic agents.This article provides a review of the latest advancements in research on the risk factors of osteoporosis in elderly patients with T2DM,both domestically and internationally,in order to provide references for future research and clinical practice.
