Avian Species Diversity of Breeding Period in Yangguan Nature Reserve,Gansu Province
[Objective]Due to the incomplete and unsystematic monitoring data of breeding birds in Yangguan Nature Reserve,Gansu Province,a survey was conducted during the breeding season to comprehensively grasp the population and distribution of breeding avian species in Yangguan so as to enhance the conservation capacity of breeding birds in the nature reserve.[Methods]Ten sampling lines and 26 sampling points were established in various areas identified as key wetland regions. The avian species diversity during the breeding period was assessed in four permanent monitoring sites and one temporary sampling site through visual observations, monitoring equipment,a thermal imaging system mounted on a field monitoring tower, and a bird vocalization recognition system. This assessment was complemented by data from the initial scientific survey.[Results]A total of 6 444 birds were recorded, belonging to 15 orders,24 families and 49 species.Among these,5 186 wetland breeding birds were classified into 11 orders,18 families and 24 species.Additionally,a total of 2 315 juveniles of wetland breeding birds were documented in the Yangguan Nature Reserve,Gansu Province.Based on the analysis of monitoring data across four permanent monitoring sites, the highest values for Shannon-Wiener diversity index,Pielou evenness index, and Simpson dominance index within breeding avian communities were observed in the Wowachi wetland.Conversely, the lowest values for these indices were found in the Jianquanzi wetland.Furthermore, the highest Margalef richness index for breeding avian communities was recorded in the Wowachi wetland;whereas the lowest values occurred in both Shuiwei seasonal wetland and Jianquanzi wetland.Notably, the greatest similarity among breeding avian communities was identified between the Jianquanzi wetland and Shuiwei seasonal wetland.[Conclusion]This study demonstrates that the Yangguan Nature Reserve,Gansu Province, situated within the desert region of western China, serves as a crucial"relay station"and"transfer station"for avian migration routes between Central Asia and India. It is imperative to pursue designation as an internationally significant wetland. The Yangguan Nature Reserve, along with its adjacent forests and grasslands, should be safeguarded through comprehensive measures including sand prevention and control, restoration of degraded wetlands, coordinated ecological water management, and rehabilitation of grasses and shrubs at the peripheries of the desert. These actions are vital for protecting breeding habitats for birds and ensuring the safety of their migratory pathways.
