The Phonetic Interpretation of Ancient Chinese Characters in Shuowenjiezi
In Shuowenjiezi,Xu Shen uses the six categories of Chinese characters to analyze character forms,ex-plain the meanings of Chinese characters and distinguish their pronunciations. Therefore,it retains many pre-cious character forms, ancient Chinese characters are large in number among them.According to Shuowen Zhong Zhi Guwen Kao(《说文中之古文考》)by Shang Chengzuo, there are a total of 521 ancient Chinese charac-ters,which corresponds to a total of 462 Xiaozhuan(小篆)in Shuowenjiezi.By selecting some ancient Chinese characters that were not originally picto-phonetic characters but gradually evolved into picto-phonetic ones in the process of character development, this paper verifies their phonetic process. Some of these examples add some phonetic symbols, other original phonetic symbols have transformed or changed. The phonetic process of Chinese characters is closely related to the forms and meanings of Chinese characters.
