Study on Geographical Names of the Chinese Zodiac in Buyei Area of Guizhou Province from the Perspective of Toponomy
Guizhou province has preserved a large number of geographical names of the Chinese zodiac.This form of place names was the result of the integration of the bazaar custom of Han and cultural traditions of Yi under the economic and military policies of the Ming Dynasty and has developed into the names of fixed places and regions.Guizhou province is the most densely distributed area of the Buyei people,and the place names of the Chinese zodiac are also the characteristic forms in the Buyei area of Guizhou province.The twelve symbolic animals match the twelve Earthly Branch of the Buyei language.The Chinese zodiac and the twelve Earthly Branches reflect the culture and history of national totem worship,show the imagination and exploration of the origin of primitive life by multiple ethnic groups,and reflect the unique national psychology.From the perspec-tive of toponymy,this paper focuses on place names of the Chinese zodiac in Buyei area of Guizhou and analyzes them at the linguistic level,which is helpful to reveal the structural semantics,regional geomorphology,cultural customs,traditional concepts,ethnic characteristics and military history of the characteristic place names in the Buyei area of Guizhou province,and also provides a sustainable exploring path for the harmonious coexistence of multi-ethnic cultures and how the Buyei culture can be inherited.
