"Seeking Meaning by Pronunciation"and Shuowenjiezi Zhu
The acoustic exegetics, originated in the pre-Qin times, developed greatly in the Western and Eastern Han dynasties and the Wei and Jin dynasties, and a monograph of acoustic exegetics represented by Liu Xi's Shiming was published.Although it solved many problems in the interpretation of terms,it had the disadvanta-ges of being scattered and isolated.Wang Shengmei in the Song dynasty further deepened the theory of phonetic radicals with ideographic functions, and put forward the Youwen theory, which inherited the rational core of acoustic exegetics, and paid more attention to the relationship between sound and meaning of a group of terms. But the problems were too absolute, and examples are not detailed enough.Later,on the basis of acoustic exege-tics and the Youwen theory, scholars in Qing dynasty gradually established a systematic theory of"seeking mea-ning by sound",and Duan Yuzai's Shuowenjiezi Zhu carried out a comprehensive practice, which mainly reflec-ted in three aspects of exploring etymology, and explaining Tongjia and compound words.
