By using research methods of observation and literature,this paper analyzes Chinese characters with Zhu(竹)-radical,Xin(辛)-radical,Dao(刀)-radical,Er(耳)-radical,Jin(金)-radical and Mu(木)-radical that have the meaning of the penalty in Shuowenjiezi in terms of their forms and their meanings of Chongwen.Understanding the diversity of the means of punishment and its cruelty in the pre-Qin times and Eastern and Western Han dynasties and the inheritance relationship between the contemporary penalty system and the pu-nishment in the ancient times can provide some reference for the construction of the society based on the rule of law in the new era.
