The Rashomon Scenario in the Corner——The Community Writing in The Scammer:His Masked Ball
The Confidence-Man:His Masquerade is one of the representative works of American Renaissance writer Herman Melville.Although it was placed with high expectation before publication, the criticisms from the academic community and the poor sales left Melville deeply disappointed. It seems that the questioning of the novel by the academic community at that time was mainly due to most scholars'ignorance of the author's original intention of literary creation. From hidden-writing perspective,Melville attempted to reflect on the current situation and future of American society from text creation and cultural identity construction in his novel. He not only pointed out the problems that arising during the construction process, but also expressed the author's own confusion. It is a Rashomon scenario of community construction drawn from the collective consciousness of American Renaissance writers.
