Fan Zhongyan wrote A Note of Yueyang Tower without climbing Yueyang Tower.The"sorrow"and"joy"contained can be found elsewhere.However,A Note of Yueyang Tower emphasizes sorrow before joy.Sorrow is the real-ity,the root,the theme,but others are foil.Joy is nothing.Sorrow is the root while joy is the end,not in existence.Sor-row is the core word of this note.Sorrow is the worry for the court and the royal family,but not for individuals,society,common people,which is different from existentialist philosophy.Contemporary people's sense of distress comes from the crisis of the environment.Though a migrant and exile,Fan didn't arouse different feelings after viewing.The feel-ings of sadness and happiness are aroused along with the different circumstances;he is not pleased by external gains or saddened by personal losses;but he is loyal to the royal family and the world's sorrow and joy is the sorrow and joy for the world.He suffered a blow from government corruption;he,as a migrant demands reform,which may be what he is worrying about.The migrant poet is frustrated for all his talent but advocates the humanity of"not pleased by external gains or saddened by personal losses",which is difficult to match with the modern humanistic spirit.
