For many years,domestic scholars have regarded Brooks and Warren's Understanding Fiction merely as one of short stories.This paper argues that Understanding Fiction is not only a collection of short stories but also contains rich and unique theories of fiction criticism.Theories such composition,plot,character,and theme are the basic contents of Understanding Fiction.The most distinctive and valuable aspect is the book's implicit critical practice,with the"sentimental tone"theory at its core.Studying the critical theories in Understanding Fiction helps to accurately understand"new criticism"and further enrich the theoretical source of contemporary literary criticism and literary education.
