The concept of"Yi"(意)is one of the crucial terms in Chinese phi-losophy.In contrast to the classical period,Yan Fu provided a new exposi-tion of the philosophical connotation of the concept of"Yi"(意)in three as-pects through an exegetical approach:the first point is that he emphasizes the relationship between self and"Yi"(意)that is the master of the heart and introduces the idea of"accumulating intentions to form the self"as a new exposition of"All things are prepared within me"(万物皆备于我);the sec-ond point is that concerning the operational process of"Yi"(意),Yan Fu ex-amines the relationship among consciousness, sensation, emotion, thought and voli-tion respectively, and describes a complex and diverse process of conscious ac-tivities.The third point is about volition and behavior.Yan Fu indicates that the process of human action is the integration of will and circumstanc-es.Will provides the meaning and method for the unfolding of actions, while circumstances are the objective elements that allow actions to unfold sig-nify.The complete process of action is the unity of will and circumstances.Yan Fu's interpretation of"Yi"(意)revitalizes the traditional Chinese concept of"Yi"(意)and,at the same time, provides a new possibility for the integra-tion of Chinese and Western philosophy.
