Further Reflection on the Argumentation Logics of Western Holistic Environmental Ethics——A Discussion with Mr.Pei Shijun and Mr.Xu Zhaoxu
At the ontological level,the representative figures of western holistic environmental ethics,J.B.Callicott and Holmes Rolston,have different argu-mentation logics for the intrinsic value of nature.However,at the epistemologi-cal and practical levels,both of them focus on the role of sympathy and follow the argumentation logic of"sympathy→value→obligation".But the subjectivi-ty of sympathy inevitably leads to the problem of moral relativism.Therefore,we should understand human beings as an organic whole of life and avoid treating them as one-dimensional rational or emotional existences.It is neces-sary to promote continuous progress in human scientific rationality while also strengthening the emotional connection between human beings and nature and exalting human moral rationality.By realizing the intrinsic value of human be-ings,we can also realize the intrinsic value of nature.
