Vocabularies'City:Modern Historical Awareness in Rort's Idea of Contigency
The idea of contingency by Rorty originates from the concept of po-tentiality in his dissertations and is explained in detail in his book Contingen-cy,Irony and Solidarity.Vocabulary is a vocabulary for individuals to create.The motivation to create vocabularies originates from an individual's anxiety about their uniqueness.Self is a heterogeneous self that presents the individu-al's uniqueness in conversation,which can only appear in a democratic sys-tem.Rorty attempts to increase sensibility to cruelty to decrease the potential cruel action so that others can become one of us consciously.What Rorty pursuits is how to make the individual do their best to attain freedom.This idea admits the validity of contingency,changes as well as freedom and presents non-subjective of modern historical awareness.This theoretical plan can solve the problem of how to balance personal interest and social responsibility with which Rorty is confronted but cannot truly solve it due to lacking clear operational procedures.
