Chillies,alias"fanjiao"in the Minnan dialect,were introduced into China over four hundred years ago as an exotic plant.The relationship between the terms"chillies"and"fanjiao"of the Minnan dialect were explored by analysing the alias.The differences between"fanjiao"and"hujiao(pepper in English)of similar species were discussed to further explore the unique linguistic meaning of the alias and the cultural val-ue of the Minnan dialect.
