Cultural Interpretation of the"地"Character Variants in The Dictionary of Variant Characters
The Chinese character"地"originally referred to the surface of the earth where human beings live,but over the course of history it has been given a wealth of cultural meanings,which are carried in the 32 vari-ant characters of"地"in the Dictionary of Chinese Character Variants.The etymology and the morpho-se-mantic relations of these variant characters were explored and it was found that ten groups of variant characters reflect three kinds of cultural information,namely,the early way of image thinking,the primitive worship of the earth,and the original concept of the universe,showing how much Chinese people respect and value the earth.
