YU Dafu and the Two Selves in Sweet Osmanthus in Belated Bloom
YU Dafu expressed his feelings of seclusion several times in his prose and old-style poetry before and after he wrote Sweet Osmanthus in Belated Bloom in 1932.In the novel, the sentiment has lingered until the return of the novel's character,Mr.YU,to Shanghai, ending the novel with a positive departure from the period in which it was written, despite its faint sorrow.Given the self-referential nature of the text, the differ-ent attitudes of WENG Zesheng and Mr.YU were analyzed in the historical context to display the dual selves of YU Dafu, interpret his responses to the realities of life and uncover the influence of the mixed Chinese and Western values behind. It is an attempt to explore how YU Dafu himself, who had constructed his modern self, choses his path in the midst of new political changes and the double oppression of real life on spiritual and material matters.
