Effects of mindful parenting on children's problem behaviors——The different roles of three parental emotion regulation strategies
In order to explore the relationship between mindful parenting and children's problem behaviors(internal and external problems),as well as the mediating role of parental emotion regulation strategies, this study surveyed parents of 498 primary school pupils, using Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Questionnaire,Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire,Self-Compassion Scale, and Child Behavior Checklist. The results showed that(1)Mindful parenting significantly negatively predicted children's problem behaviors.(2)Parental self-compassion mediated the relationship between mindful parenting and two types of children's problem behaviors.(3)Parental cognitive reappraisal did not mediate the relation-ship between mindful parenting and two types of children's problem behaviors.(4)Parental expression inhibition only mediated the relationship between mindful parenting and children's external problem behaviors. These results indicate that mindful parenting can help reduce or partially reduce children's problem behaviors by increasing parental self-compassion and expression inhibition, and the mediating role of parental cognitive reappraisal needs further investigation.
