The impact of emoji on sender's emotional perception:the role of sender's interpersonal distance
This paper designed two experiments to explore the impact of emojis on the message receiver's perception of the sender's emotions, and the role of interpersonal distance in it.The results showed that:(1)emojis affected the message receiver's perception of the sender's emotions. When the emojis supple-ment the text information, the emojis and the emotive valences of the text are consistent or inconsistent, and the emotive valences will strengthen or weaken the emotive effects. When emojis replace text informa-tion,they only weaken emotion when emojis and text emotional valences are inconsistent.(2)When emojis supplement text information, the effect of emojis on perception of sender's emotions varies with in-terpersonal distance. When the sender was a stranger, the emoji enhanced the mood, but when the sender was a friend, there was no such enhancement. The results support the theory of non-verbal signal process-ing to some extent.
