Influence of perceived stress on the mental health of college students:The mediating role of sleep quality
To explore the mediating role of sleep quality in the relationship between stress perception and men-tal health of college students,an online questionnaire survey was conducted on 352 college students from Soochow University,Suzhou City University,Applied Technology College of Soochow University, and Suzhou University of Science and Technology by using Perceived Stress Scale,Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Symptom Check-list 90.The results showed that:(1)There were no significant differences in stress perception, sleep quality and mental health among college students of different genders and different origins;(2)There was a significant posi-tive correlation between stress perception, sleep quality and mental health of college students.(3)Both of the di-rect effect of stress perception on mental health and the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship be-tween stress perception and mental health were significant, with direct and mediating effect sizes of 0.16 and 0.13 respectively. It can be seen that the stress perception of college students can directly predict their mental health, and can also indirectly affect their mental health through the mediating effect of sleep quality. It is suggested that colleges and universities should take more scientific and effective measures to improve students'mental health,in-cluding strengthening mental health education, enhancing individual psychological resilience, improving students'enthusiasm for physical exercise, and cultivating regular work and rest habits.
