Objectives To investigate the effect of ablation index(AI)on isolated porcine hearts. Methods Radiofre-quency ablation(RFA)was performed on isolated porcine hearts using the STSF catheter, and the size of the ablation lesions and ablation duration were recorded with different AI values(300,400,500)at different ablation powers(30 W,35 W,40 W,45 W,50 W)and contact force(CF)(10 g,20 g).Experiment one compared the ablation lesions at the same AI values with different ablation power and CF.Experiment two compared the effect of ablation lesions of a single full dose of AI with two cumulative small doses of AI.Experiment three compared the lesions at the same ablation parameters with perpendicular apposition versus parallel apposition. Results In Experiment one,for the same AI values, different ablation power and CF caused similar ablation depths(P=0.42),and increased ablation power or CF reduced ablation time.In Experiment two,a single full dose of AI resulted in a deeper ablation depth than multiple cumulative ablations with small doses of AI(5.2 mm vs.3.7 mm).In Experiment three, there was no significant difference in the size of the ablationlesions between the different catheter apposition methods under the same ablation conditions. Conclusions When the ablation power ranged from 30 W to 50 W,the size of the ablated lesion was independent of the apposition method, ablation power and CF.Furthermore,a single full dose of AI resulted in deeper ablation than two cumulative ablations of small doses of AI.
