The Beginning of Cultural Aggression:The Japanese Government's Investigation and Reaction to the May Fourth Movement in the Twenties of the Twentieth Century
The outbreak of the May Fourth Movement has aroused the attention of the Japanese government and the public, and the government believes that it is an"anti-Japanese movement"instigated by British and American forces with young Chinese students as the main force. The participation of young students brought the anti-Japanese aggression movement to a new stage, and its content expanded from the boycott of Japa-nese products to the ideological and cultural fields. The Japanese Government has adopted a series of coun-termeasures to this, with various consulates in China making frequent representations demanding the ban-ning of the student movement;conducting a comprehensive investigation of the student movement organiza-tions to find evidence of the infiltration and participation of the United States,Britain,Russia, and other pow-ers;monitoring and obstructing the nongovernmental ideological exchange activities between China and Ja-pan;and strictly preventing the"excessive"ideological import of the May Fourth Movement caused by ex-changes between the new intellectual circles of the two countries by monitoring and obstructing the actions of the Peking University student group visiting Japan and banning the visits of intellectuals such as Sakuzo Yo-shino.This also became an important turning point and opportunity for Japan to open up its cultural penetra-tion into China through oriental cultural undertakings in the 20s of the 20th century.
