Bamboo in the Southern Land:The Craftsmanship,Products, and Lifestyle of Bamboo Strips in the Mid-Qing Dynasty——Based on the Materials of the Book of the Penal Cases in Qianlong and Jiaqing Period
This article explores the relationship between individuals and material goods, focusing on social histo-ry,especially the history of daily life.During the mid-Qing Dynasty, bamboo strip craftsmen operated shops or rented them out, establishing relationships with neighbors, tenants, and landlords. These craftsmen were involved in borrowing, lending, and land lease disputes with others.Records from the book of the penal cases mentioned bamboo strip products such as woven bamboo mats called"miedian",bamboo ropes for pulling boats called"mietan",as well as bamboo baskets and containers widely used.Bamboo strips were also used for fences and shelters. Many criminal cases occurred during bamboo splitting activities, leading to bamboo knives being used as weapons.Examples from Sichuan indicated that bamboo splitting often took place in courtyards, doorsteps,or outside doors, with similar patterns observed in other regions.Cases from Sichuan and Zhejiang involved bamboo groves. The fact that some crimes involved bamboo knives readily available suggests that individuals carried them for bamboo splitting or self defensing in daily lives, thus often keeping them handy at their waist. The majority of cases related to bamboo strips were from Sichuan, while examples from Zhejiang reflected the prevalence of local bamboo culture.
