The Diplomatic Philosophy and Practice of the India League of America(1941-1959)
The Indian League of America(ILA)was the most influential Indian American non-governmental organization in the first half of the twentieth century. It was dedicated to Indian independence and the improvement of the relationship between United State and India. It succeeded in changing the attitude of the U.S.Congress on specific issues such as securing U.S.aid to India and relaxing the policy on In-dian immigration. But ILA believed that international status of India could not be raised without United States and tried to replace the Indian government in making national statements on major international issues and supported for American intervention in Asian affairs, which led it to become opposed to the Indian government and to lose its authority in explaining Indian affairs in America.Though ILA was unable to change the foreign strategies of United States and India,it narrowed the gap between the gov-ernments of India and the United States on specific issues and played a supplementary role to govern-ment diplomacy under the limited development of relations between the two countries.
