Preliminary Study on the Effect of Total Flavonoids of Penthorum chinense Pursh on Iron Loading of Iron Overload Rats
Objective:To investigate the effect of total flavonoids of Penthorum chinense Pursh(PCP)on iron loading in rats of iron overload model.Method:Male SD rats were randomly divided into a control group,a model group, and a low(25 mg·kg-1)and high(100 mg·kg-1)dose group of total flavonoids of PCP.Iron overload was induced by intraperitoneal injection of iron dextrose in the rat model, and the iron content in liver, spleen, pancreas, heart and kidney of rats in each group was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry.Result:Compared with the control group, the iron content in the liver, spleen, pancreas, heart and kidney of rats in the model group was significantly increased(P<0.001),and the iron overload rat model was successful;the iron content in all tissues was significantly decreased than that in the model group after the intervention of total flavonoids of PCP(P<0.01),and the iron content in the liver, kidney, and heart of total flavonoids of PCP was significantly lower than that of the low dose group in the high dose group(P<0.05).Conclusion:The total flavonoids of PCP were able to reduce tissue iron loading in iron-overloaded rats, which may be related to its strong iron chelating activity and antioxidant properties.
