Building of a Cross-cultural Community of Aesthetics by Experimental Translation of Su Shi's Poems
In the New Culture Movement,Hsen-Hsu Hu and Harold Acton dedicated to inheriting and disseminating ex-cellent traditional Chinese culture aimed to make a breakthrough in exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and western cultures by selectively translating Nine of Su Shi's Poems on T'ien Hsia Monthly,a platform for cross-cultural communication. With the intention of building a human community of aesthetics, the translators integrated the polyphonic aspirations of literati and the connotations of Confucian culture into the experimental translation of ancient poems as a representative of excellent traditional Chinese culture. In terms of English translation strategies, the translators creatively rendered the cultural elements such as styles, meters, images and artistic conceptions of Su Shi's poems in the four aspects of"body","skin","spirit"and"appearance".Through translation, the translators deconstructed Su Shi's poems, for which they adopted diversified poetic styles, refined ele-gant poetic meters, deliberated over renderings of images and verified the resemblances of artistic conceptions in form and spirit. From the perspective of exchanges and mutual learning between cultures, their translation of poems inherited and continued the root of Chinese culture in the soil of a different culture,to set an example for the cross-cultural translation of ancient Chinese po-ems fusing aspirations and outward grace and inner virtue.
