On The Development Trend of the Contradiction between Scholars and Officials and the Choice of Scholars in the Tang Dynasty
The contradiction between scholars and officials in the Tang Dynasty began in the Xuanzong period.Later genera-tions have visualized the fictional plot of Gao Lishi"taking off his boots"for Li Bai,which is a typical case of scholars'disgust at eunuchs'politics.After the rebellion by An Lushan and Shi Siming,eunuchs made great contributions to imperial power consoli-dation and were favored by the emperor.Their military leadership is regarded as the most practical reward.The communication and conflicts between scholars and eunuchs in the middle Tang Dynasty reflect the development trend of the contradictions in dif-ferent periods.The Ganlu Incident leads to the complete break between scholars and eunuchs.In this way,in addition to the tradi-tional fear and alienation,there is another choice of speculative attachment for scholars.The attachment,condemned by scholars,has little impact on the official career of such scholars due to the power of eunuchs.
