Taking Guo Yu as an example to Explore the source of"Bu gu"
"Bu gu"appears 11 times in Guo Yu,including 5 times in Chu Yu,5 times in Yue Yu,and 1 time in Wu Yu,all of which are the words for the king to style himself or calling another king."Bu gu"only appeared in the south, while there was no such statement in the Central Plains then. Therefore, according to the exploration of"Bu gu"from Guo Yu,"Bu gu"is found to originate from the self-proclaimed title of the king of Chu,and then Wu and Yue followed suit.Meanwhile, from the perspec-tive of Wu and Yue being influenced by the cultural penetration of Chu,it is discussed that the kings of Wu and Yue also styled themselves"Bu gu".Finally, this paper explores from the unearthed documents of Shangbo Bamboo Slips,Tsinghua Bamboo Slips,Mawangdui Han Tombs Silk Books and inscriptions on ancient bronze objects, finding that the original character of Gu in Bugu is actually another character of Gu,that is"(穀)".Because"(穀)"is a dialect word of Chu,it was replaced by the more frequently used Gu in later generations, both of which are interchangeability characters.
