The Early Spread of Taidong Daily and the Left-wing Literary Trends in Dalian
Taidong Daily is the most influential Chinese-language newspaper in Dalian during the Japanese colonial period. In its early years, under the leadership of a pro-China sinologist Jinzi Pingji and a senior revolutionist Fu Liyu, the newspaper maintained a certain degree of editorial independence. From 1919 to 1928,it published a large number of articles introducing Marxism and Soviet socialist thoughts, demonstrating a sympathetic stance towards the left-wing.Taidong Daily played a closely related role in the communication of left-wing ideologies and new literature, which paid much attention to the early left-wing thought pioneers in China such as Li Dazhao,Chen Duxiu and Qu Qiubai, and also published left-wing literary theories and works by Shen Yanbing,Tian Han,Shen Zemin and Jiang Guangci.Taidong Daily placed equal emphasis on the theoretical dis-cussion and works creation of left-wing literary trends, with its coverage almost in sync with the movements within Shanhaiguan. The spread of left-wing literary trend in the Japan-colonized Dalian region has important anti-colonial significance. It not only timely conveyed the latest literary trends to the people of Dalian under colonial rule, but also provided valuable theoretical re-sources and spiritual support for the left-wing resistance movements in Dalian through its embodied anti-imperialist thoughts.
