Modalities and Functions of Fictional Worlds:On Dole?el's Possible Worlds Fiction Theory
Lubomír Doležel,as a prominent contemporary Czech scholar,is one of the pioneers of Literary Possible Worlds Theory. He used the Possible Worlds Theory to examine narrative and literary fiction, believing that the constraints of the"one-world framework"should be broken and a"possible-worlds framework"should be constructed. With the introduction of the Possible Worlds Theory,it can be found that the process of reading literary works is actually the process of readers being involved in the fictional world. The principles of the construction and operation of this literary fictional world are summarized by Doležel as narrative modalities and intensional functions.Although Doležel's analysis of the internal structure and modal types of literary fiction words shows a tendency towards logicism,it also reflects his inheritance and development of structuralism, providing us with new ideas and perspectives for a deeper understanding of literary fiction.
