A Study of the Phonetic Annotation of the Dialects in the Xinfan Chronicles of the Republic of China
In the Xinfan Chronicles of the Republic of China(1947),the 4th volume Rites and Customs-Dialects is a documentary record of the dialects spoken in the Xinfan area in the first half of the 20th century.Within it,70 dialect entries are accompanied by phonetic annotations,which can be divided into two categories,namely historical phonetic annotations and newly compiled phonetic annotations.These phonetic notes directly reflect compilers'emphasis of the pronunciation differences between the dialects and standard language,their adherence to a historical perspective that connects ancient and modern phonetics,and their attention to accurately recording the pronunciation and meaning of dialectal words.By analyzing the phonetic structure of dialects in depth,it can be observed that some regional accents still retain more archaic pronunciations,reflecting certain characteristics of sound,rhyme,and tone from the Minjiang dialect of Southwestern Mandarin during the era of the Republic of China..
