A Study on Temporal Demonstrative Pronouns in Southwestern Mandarin Since the Late Qing Dynasty
By comparing the usage of temporal demonstrative pronouns in Southwestern Mandarin during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China with their modern counterparts,this study reveals that some usages of temporal demonstrative pronouns have remained unchanged for more than a hundred years,and that some have changed.The changes were mainly reflected in the following aspects:in terms of lexical items,the usage of"Zhe/Na Hui(er)","Zhe/Na(Yi)Jiu",and"Zhe/Na(Yi)Bo/Fa(Zi)"increased,while the usage of"Zhe/Na Shi Jie"shrank;in terms of frequency,the use of proximal and distal reference showed asymmetry in the late Qing and early Republic of China,which basically disappeared in modern Southwestern Mandarin;in terms of syntactic distribution,the distribution range of modem Southwestern Mandarin increased;in terms of regional distribution,the usage of temporal morphemes"Xia","Hui","Jiu"and"Bo/Fa"increased,while the usage of"Shi Jie"shrank.
