Barley,an herbaceous plant from the grass family,is charactered by stout stems and slim leaves with a height of 100 cm or so.It comes to mature in the summer and autumn of each year.Being yellow or grayish-white,its grain is high in pro-tein content. The starch content therein is only slightly lower than that in corn.Low price makes barley an ideal energy feed. When examined from comprehensive nutritional value, barley plays a vital role in feed.To date,it has been rarely used as rumi-nant feed. This paper reviews the research achievements that have been made on the application of barley in ruminant feeds in the hope to offer reference for future application.
