A Study on the Translation,Dissemination and Reader Acceptance of Huainanzi in America—Taking English Huainanzi by John S.Major as an Example
As a traditional classic text,Huainanzi lags behind the Analects and Tao Te Ching in English-speaking countries in terms of translation and dissemination.The first English version Huainanzi by John S.Major enjoys a pivotal position in the overseas translation and dissemination system.Firstly,the translation and dissemination of Major's Huainanzi is explored in depth based on Juliane House's translation-quality-assessment model and the NLPIR;secondly,applies Wolfgang Iser's text acceptance theory is applied to investigate the reader acceptance of Major's translation in Mississippi of the U.S.A.in semantic,contextual,and grammatical dimensions,with the help of the paired-sample T-test and the Mann-Whitney median test of SPSS;lastly,through the micro-changes of behaviors shown by readers in reading the target text,it is found that John S.Major's translation focuses on the creation of context,and the acceptance consciousness of the American readers has been significantly improved in the contextual level.The investigation result implies that in terms of the translation and dissemination of Chinese classics to foreign countries,we should have the audience awareness,make efforts to create good contexts for reading classics,and actually improve both readability and acceptance of the target versions,so as to promote the effective dissemination of Chinese culture,and then gradually enhance China's discourse power.
