A Study of Several Historical Events of the Beijing Defense War in the Ming Dynasty
Xian Sumin Gong Xing Zhuang(先肃愍公行状)by Yu Qian's son Yu Mian attributed the victory of the Beijing Defense War to Yu Qian alone, which has been widely accepted by later scholars. However, examining the accounts of Li Xian,Liu Dingzhi,Ye Sheng, and even Yu Qian himself, the victory of the Beijing Defense War was actually the result of the collective efforts of the Ming Jingdi and his ministers. This is reflected in the following five historical events.Firstly, the main advocates of"Advising Against the Southward Migration(谏阻南迁)"were eunuchs such as Jin Ying.Secondly, the protagonist of"Stabilizing the Court(朝堂定乱)"was Emperor Jingdi himself.Thirdly,Emperor Jingdi was in charge of all war and defense matters, and Yu Qian was an important assistant to him.General Shi Heng and Yu Qian had equal status.Fourthly, the Ming army's killing of the enemy was limited, but Emperor Jingdi and his ministers quickly repelled the Wala army with perseverance and wisdom.Fifthly, the unintentional mutual cooperation between Emperor Yingzong and Emperor Jingdi contributed to the capture of the rebellious eunuch Xi Ning.
