Effects of Sphagnum Harvesting on Water Quality of Sphagnum Wetland,Southwestern of Hubei Province
To assess whether Sphagnum harvesting has an impact on water quality,15 water quality indicators were selected to compare and analyze the differences in water quality indicators between unharvested Sphagnum wetlands and harvested Sphagnum wetlands in southwestern of Hubei Province, and the impacts of Sphagnum harvesting on wetland water quality were evaluated by using the comprehensive Water Quality Index(WQI)method. The results showed that:1)compared with the unharvested Sphagnum wetland,CODMN and DOC in the harvested Sphagnum wetland increased significantly by 146.95%and 144.06%(P<0.05),and EC and TDS increased significantly by 59.52%and 63.68%,respectively before rainfall;and CODMN in the harvested Sphagnum wetland increased significantly by 34.53%after rainfall(P<0.05).2)The WQI in the harvested Sphagnum wetland was lower than that in the unharvested Sphagnum wetland, and the water quality was changed from Class Ⅲ in unharvested Sphagnum wetlands to Class Ⅳ in harvested Sphagnum wetlands;the WQI at the outlet of the wetland was higher than that in the wetland, and the Sphagnum had an obvious purifying effect on the water quality.3)The main sources of water quality pollution due to Sphagnum harvesting were soluble ions and organic matter. Therefore,in order to better protect the Sphagnum wetland and water source, more publicity should be given to popular science and harvesting of wetland Sphagnum moss should be prohibited.
