Research on the Impact of the Digital Economy on Urban-Rural Income Inequality:Digital Empowerment or Digital Negative Effect
This paper empirically examines the impact of the digital economy on urban-rural income in-equality based on panel data from prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2020,utilizing a double fixed ef-fects model and a threshold effect model. The results indicate that the impact of the digital economy on urban-rural income inequality shows a U-shaped nonlinear relationship, initially decreasing inequality then expanding it.Furthermore, the degree of urbanization presents a double threshold effect in the pro-cess by which the digital economy influences urban-rural income inequality.Additionally, the impact of the digital economy exhibits regional heterogeneity, with effects in the eastern regions being greater than those in the northeast, central, and western regions. The U-shaped turning point values, from largest to smallest, are in the eastern, western, and northeast regions, whereas the central region remains insignifi-cant.Based on these findings,it is suggested that future efforts should focus on further unleashing the promoting effects of the digital economy in central and western regions, advancing digital rural construc-tion in eastern regions, and enhancing digital literacy and skills among farmers, thereby narrowing the ur-ban-rural income gap and improving urban-rural income inequality.
