The advancement of artificial intelligence has significantly influenced China's labor market.Utilizing a panel dataset from 30 provinces in China spanning 2009 to 2019,this paper constructs an ar-tificial intelligence level index.By employing fixed-effect models and mediating and moderating effect models,it empirically investigates the impact of artificial intelligence on flexible employment and the un-derlying mechanisms. The findings indicate that the application of artificial intelligence has remarkably increased the scale of flexible employment, with this effect being moderated by government intervention.Artificial intelligence has resulted in the"polarization"rather than"upgrading"of the employment struc-ture,and this"polarization"mediates the effect of artificial intelligence on flexible employment.A study of regional heterogeneity reveals that the influence of artificial intelligence on flexible employment is sig-nificant in the eastern, central, and western regions of China, but less pronounced in the northeastern region. Therefore,it is recommended that the government balance the development of artificial intelli-gence with the level of government intervention and create tailored training programs for laborers with varying skill sets to enhance flexible employment and ensure job security.
