Research on the Impact of the Digital Economy on the Urban-Rural Income Disparity
Utilizing panel data from 30 provinces in China between 2013 and 2020,this paper exam-ines the impact of the digital economy on urban-rural income disparity. It employs mediation,modera-tion,and threshold effects to verify the roles of the business environment, urbanization level, industrial agglomeration degree, and industrial structure rationalization in the process by which the digital econo-my influences urban-rural income disparity. The research findings indicate:(1)The impact of the digi-tal economy on urban-rural income disparity exhibits a U-shaped trend in China as a whole and in the eastern region of China, while showing an inverted U-shaped trend in the central and western regions, with China still in a phase where the digital economy reduces urban-rural income disparity;(2)The ac-tivity levels of the digital industry, digital users, digital platforms, and digital governance display a U-shaped impact on urban-rural income disparity, whereas digital transaction activity level reveals a nega-tive linear impact on urban-rural income disparity;(3)The business environment serves as a crucial mediating mechanism for the U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and urban-rural in-come disparity;(4)The urbanization level acts as a moderating factor in the U-shaped relationship be-tween the digital economy and urban-rural income disparity;(5)The degree of industrial agglomeration and the rationalization of industrial structure exhibit single and double threshold effects, respectively,in the impact of the digital economy on urban-rural income disparity.
