The Influence of the Tao Philosophy on the Aesthetic Thought of Twenty-four Evaluations of Poems
Twenty-four Evaluations of Poems(er shi si shi pin)is a monograph on the aesthetic appreciation of poems at the end of the Tang Dynasty, and its aesthetic thought is deeply influenced by Confucianism,Buddhism, and Taoism, while the influence of Taoism is especially obvious, mainly in the aesthetic ontology, contextualization, and personality theory. In terms of ontology, the logical starting point and the highest goal of"transcend the image the world and attain the center of the universe"in the book is the Taoist"Tao"of nature.Concerning contextualization, the Tao philosophy influences the book in its pursuit of the interplay of the real and the imaginary, and the blending of situations. With regard to personality theory, the personalities of"beauty"(mei ren,美人)and"good scholar"(jia shi,佳士)are similar to the aesthetic connotations of the images of"monstrous man"in Chuang Tzu,and the aesthetic pursuit of"open-mindedness"echoes with the Taoist ideal of"communicating with the spirit of heaven and earth".
