Characteristics of fineness and stretched length of Xizang yak wool and their relationship with age and gender
In order to understand the basic characteristics of yak wool and further clarify the quality and market development prospects of yak wool on northern Tibetan plateau. The samples of yak wool from 1 107 yaks in 12 counties of northern Tibetan plateau were collected. Then the fineness and stretched length of yak wool were measured by optical projection microscope and steel rule, respectively, and their relationships with the age and gender of yaks were analyzed. The results show that the average fineness and stretched length of yak wool on the northern Tibetan plateau were 17.88 μm and 47.2 mm,respectively. There was no significant correlation between the two characteristics. With the increasing of age,the fineness of yak wool increased significantly, but the stretched length did not change obviously. In addition, gender had no significant effects on the fineness and stretched length of yak wool. This study will provide data support for the grading of yak wool in northern Tibetan plateau and even in China.
