The Historical Evolution and Connotative Significance of the Concept of Living Heritage in Peru
At the beginning of the 20th century, under the influence of indigenismo thought,Peruvian scholars began to focus on the living culture of indigenous societies. After the exploration of indigenous modernization in the mid-20th century,Peruvian society increased its attention to living culture, preliminarily forming a present-oriented,open,and inclusive view of living heritage. After the 1970s,with the development of international cultural heritage safeguarding actions and the formation of a consensus on culture diversity, living heritage was granted a legitimate status.Following the initiative of UNESCO for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, the Peruvian government established a mechanism for the safeguarding work, clarified the continuity, fluidity, and specificity of living heritage.Based on the establishment of symbiotic relationships between humans, nature, and society,a systematic, comprehensive, and complementary view of living heritage has been constructed. The conceptual connotation of living heritage expresses the pluralistic subjects of Peruvian society, using culture as a starting point to break the dominance of Western centrism, seeking a coexistence and inclusive world order, and reconstructing a vison of diversity, vitality, and potentials.
