Environment and Concept:The Phenomenon of Chenwei and the Political Implications in Linping Lake in the Early Middle Ages
In the middle ancient times,Linping Lake, located in the northern part of Hangzhou Bay along the Qiantang River, had a complex and varied hydrological environment.Due to the occasional occurrence of lake opening and lake blockage, there was a popular legend among the people that"the world is chaotic due to lake blockage, and the world is peaceful due to lake opening".The legend of Chenwei(谶纬)has been deconstructed and interpreted by rulers and scholars, continuously generalized and deified, and then elevated to political construction, linking"lake opening"with the bestowal of divine mandate, especially in the discourse system constructed by the Sun Wu regime. The rulers regarded"lake opening"as an auspicious symbol to declare destiny and obtain political legitimacy. With the transformation of Linping Lake from a salty water environment to a clear water environment, the phenomenon of Chenwei and latitude moved towards extinction. On the one hand, this reflects the influence of the natural environment on ideological concepts, and on the other hand, the limitations of natural anomalies being given specific meanings by rulers.
