Space Translation and Meaning Struggle:the Communicative Figuration and Media Practice of Bath Center——An Ethnography research based on the media communication of Shenyang Dama group
This study examines the mediatized urban life and communica-tive figurations of elderly women in specific spaces, using Shenyang,China,as a case study.Due to historical and climatic reasons, visiting bath centers has become a common leisure and social activity for Shenyang residents.Bath centers have become"figurative quality"in the process of mediatization,pro-viding potential for weaving local and community-based communicative figu-rations.The research finds that the Dama group attempts to domesticate bath centers, utilizing platform media to build and extend social relationships within their community.Additionally, the Dama group views the practice of"going to the bath center"as a social encounter that helps them withdraw from familial relationships and deepen social bonds. However, this practice not only faces skepticism from their families regarding its rationality but also conflicts with the middle-class mainstream population's imagination of public space as quiet and orderly. Thus, examining the communicative figurations of the Dama group in bath centers not only reveals the interactions between actors, media, and space in the deep mediatization era but also offers a possi-bility to further explore the relationships between generations, gender, and urban life.
