Abstract
The Purple Hairpin constitutes the first "dream" of Tang Xianzu's "Four Dreams of Linchuan". It marked the beginning of the mature period of his playwriting, and was an early attempt by him to advocate through playwriting his theory that "emotion is the ultimate thing". As part of our introduction to and critical notes on The Purple Hairpin, this paper starts with an examination of Tang Xianzu's reworking of the chuanqi story "Life of Huo Xiaoyu" from the Tang Dynasty, focusing on his achievements in this play in developing its characters, but also discusses the intellectual and artistic achievements and limitations of the play.
