The Relationship Between Neuroticism and Problematic Mobile Social Media Use:Chain Mediation Effect Analysis
Problematic mobile social media use among college students has become a widely discussed topic, and neuroticism is thought to be an important personality trait associated with this behavior. However, the current research lacks exploration of its mechanisms.Based on a survey of 795 college students from a university in Guangdong Province, this study examined the relationships between neuroticism, intolerance of uncertainty, fear of missing out,and problematic mobile social media use,as well as tested the indirect effects. The empirical findings revealed that:(1)Neuroticism,intolerance of uncertainty, fear of missing out,and problematic mobile social media use were all significantly and positively correlated;(2)Neuroticism can indirectly predict college students'problematic mobile social media use through both intolerance of uncertainty and fear of missing out,as well as the chain of mediation between intolerance of uncertainty and fear of missing out. These findings are significant for gaining a deeper understanding of college students'mobile social media use behavior and the role of personality factors in it,offering theoretical and practical guidance for improving individuals'social media usage behavior.
