Enhancing a Strong Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation through Frame Effect:Based on a Perspective of Construal Level and Interpersonal Psychological Distance
Fostering a strong sense of commu-nity for the Chinese nation is a focal point of ethnic work in the new era of China. To promote this de-velopment of the consciousness of the Chinese na-tional community, targeted policies and strategic communication can be employed using"throw a sprat to catch a herring"(leverages small-scale ef-forts for broader impact). In addition, the concept of frame effect, exemplifying this strategy, posits that the presentation of homogeneous information will have a different impact on the behavior or atti-tude of the audience, and connecting concrete de-tails of daily life with community construction has demonstrated to better contribute to the community construction behavior. In this study, the effects of framing on behavior are discussed from two per-spectives:Construal level and interpersonal psy-chological distance.Construal level theory suggests that individuals perceive cognitive objects at differ-ent levels of abstraction, affecting individual be-havioral responses. The direction of publicity and policy for people in the community, whether focu-sing on macro-level arguments or individuals'per-ception of tangible activities, can yield varying effects on audiences in different situations.Inter-personal psychological distance,on the other hand, pertains to individuals'perception of the rel-evance of others or any affairs to themselves or their perception of the relevance of policies and publicity to themselves within the community. This is interwoven with people's beliefs of how much im-pact their participation can have on community building, thereby produciong different effect.Across three framework levels, this study in-vestigates the factors that influence individual en-gagement in community-building behaviors,ex-plored through three sub-studies.Study 1 started from the perspective of promoting framework and defense framework of situational regulatory orienta-tion,and found that in scenarios characterized by short interpersonal psychological distance and low explanation level,or long interpersonal psychologi-cal distance and high construal level, the defense framework could elicit stronger intentions for com-munity construction than the promoting framework.Conversely,no significant differences were ob-served between the two frameworks in contexts with other combinations of interpersonal psychological distance and construal levels.Study 2 investigated macro and micro frames at both individual and so-cietal levels, drawing from psychological reactance theory. It is found that at higher construal levels, the macro frame is more likely to evoke community-building behaviors compared to the micro frame.Study 3 starts focuses on the temporal perspectives of long distal proximal framework and the current framework, and it is found that different interper-sonal psychological distances and explanatory lev-els lead to behavioral intention reversals in long distal or current proximal frameworks. What is more,in a long distal framework, individuals ex-hibit stronger intentions to participate in projects with close interpersonal psychological distance and low construal levels, whereas participation inten-tions reverse in a current proximal framework. In conclusion, this study highlights the complementa-ry nature of different policy and publicity frame-works across diverse contexts.Utilizing appropriate frameworks tailored to specific situations may better promote individual participation in community building.
