Constructing the Consciousness of Chinese National Community through Ethnic Short Videos
In recent years,short-video plat-forms have emerged as tools for showcasing tradi-tional cultural festivals and ethnic custom,each with distinctive characteristics.Data has shown that whether or not ethnic short videos can effec-tively portray multi-ethnic characteristics and reso-nate with public emotions has a bearing on the por-trayal of a cohesive multi-ethnic identity,cultural dissemination,value recognition,and the con-struction of a sense of community for the Chinese nation.Moreover,the"topic"function on these platforms not only seems to aggregate video con-tents of the same type,but also connects every producer and consumer engaged with these topics.Studies,furthermore,show that ethnic short videos apparently are created by three distinct groups:official spokespersons of ethnic regions,internet influencers and bloggers with ethnic minor-ity backgrounds or extensive residence in such re-gions,and ordinary individuals exploring ethnic ar-eas or check in ethnic minority topics as tourists.These creators typically employ thematic tags such as"ethnic characteristics","ethnic culture","ethnic customs",and"ethnic charms",aligning them with the creation contents and the platform prompts.Thus,with targeted promotion and en-gaging content,they can present a vivid,diverse,and charismatic image of multi-ethnicity.For ex-ample,directors'viral successes extending beyond their immediate circles may act as an attractive ex-pression of the official discourse;internet celebrities'check-ins online produce the local knowledge of opinion leaders;and ordinary tourists'experiences help them immerse in ethnic customs and Chinese culture.Therefore,the topic-tagging function of ethnic short videos has demonstrated to facilitate a vibrant expression of high ethnic cultures,foster cohesion and integration across diverse audience segments,promote local intellectual property creation,and thus realize a revitalization and visualization in the communication of the sense of Chinese national community on short video platforms.What is more,through title descriptions,topic links,and content presentations,ethnic short videos have cre-ated three primary themes characterized by ethnici-ty:"Rural revitalization","good life",and"cul-tural empathy".In more detail,"rural revitaliza-tion"refers to the industrial support for forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation,"good life"to emotional bonds,and"cultural em-pathy"to deeper motivations.As a collaborative media form shaped by public interaction,ethnic short videos should reaffirm their initial role of sha-ping community identity.Besides,they should also respect the unique characteristics of multi-ethnic cultures,incorporate the national intangible es-sence of multi-ethnicity,and empower the images and cultural resources of ethnic peoples in a form that is pleasing to the public,in an effort to en-hance emotional resonance and public recognition.Simultaneously,short video content creation should also try to navigate the delicate balance between the individuality and commonality of multi-ethnic cultures and focus on shared values embedded in these multi-ethnic cultures.Lastly,the creators of short videos should avoid falling into the trap of capital and"the gaze of tourists",re-center on na-tional subjectivity,invigorating multi-ethnic cul-tures and contributing to a contemporary narrative of the Chinese national community in the new era.
