Transmission and"Re-Signification"of Ramayana in Southeast Asia
Ramayana is a widely disseminated religious epic in Southeast Asia,with localized versions and various artistic expressions in almost every country in the region.By analyzing the transmission of Ramayana in Southeast Asia and demonstrating the effort to"re-signify"the ancient text by Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN)in response to thecurrent situation,this study reveals the transition of Ramayana from a religious epic to a cultural symbol,and further to a symbol of a shared regional identity.The religious epic Ramayana,after undergoing the process of"re-signification",has played a unique and significant role in promoting the historical process of transforming Southeast Asia from"someone else's Southeast Asia"to"Southeast Asians'Southeast Asia".
