A Review of the Research on the Integrity of the Chinese Nation in the Ethnological Circle in the 1940s
In the 1940s,a group of ethnological researchers such as Yang Chengzhi and Rui Yifu proposed that on the basis of recognizing the coexistence of multiple ethnic groups, building a nation with the sense of community should be promoted by strengthening the study of inter-ethnic relations and the consolidation of the integrity of the Chinese nation.Meanwhile,Li Ji,Cen Jiawu and other scholars attempted to create new boundaries on the research objects, paths and methods of ethnology, aiming to internalize these explorations into the theoretical construction of the discipline. However, under the constraints of the"clan theory"of the Nationalist Government, the ethnologists'plan for the establishment of the country based on"multi-ethnicity"was not accepted by both political and academic circles.Furthermore, their alienation from the ethnic theory of the Communist Party of China eventually led them into the dilemma of knowledge production. This historical episode shows the historical outlook of the construction of ethnic theory in modern China, and also lays the foundation for the advancement of ethnic theory in China in the future.Relevant historical experience and lessons remind us that the development of any discipline must be rooted in China's reality and effectively communicate the concept of unity.
