Four Paradigms of Realism in Contemporary Chinese Television Drama
Four expressions of realism spirit emerged in contemporary Chinese television drama:everyday re-alism,idealistic realism,spectacle realism,and integrative realism.These paradigms demonstrate the resili-ence and expansiveness of realism in current Chinese television drama.The resilience lies in the fact that both everyday realism and idealistic realism,as dominant paradigms,continue and demonstrate expressive and influential power in the new era.The expansiveness is manifested in the vigorous growth of spectacle re-alism and integrative realism.They represent emerging paradigms of realism that have accelerated develop-ment and significant impact since the beginning of the new era,potentially leaving milestone works for future generations.It is also worth noting that,within these four paradigms,the fusion of realism spirit with the tra-ditional Chinese mentality theory has produced novel compound effects which results in the emergence of ma-ture works of Chinese mentality realism paradigm and the appearance of two new forms,namely,stepping forward in the deep description of individual psychological knots and shaping typical personalities with mod-ern gentleman-like demeanor.
