The Stagnant Temperament of Chinese Art Films in the Context of Slow Cinema
Slow cinema,as a novel concept or method in film theory,is being increasingly accepted,uti-lized,and expanded by academics on art films worldwide.Within the context of slow cinema, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of Chinese art films, particularly their aesthetic and linguistic expressions in the 21st century.By comparing them with Western slow cinema, the main characteristics of Chinese art films can be summarized as following:they exhibit stagnant quality of Eastern poetic aesthetics through fixed or slowly moving cinematography,non-personal viewpoints of silent contemplation, lyrical stitching of non-dramatic long shots, and loose non-linear temporal and spatial structures.Although Chinese art films are influenced by European slow cinema, inherent Eastern sense of time and traditional Chinese consciousness of life imbue the narrative techniques, audiovisual language coding, and spatial composition of Chinese art films with stylistic tendencies. These tendencies are highly compatible with traditional Chinese values, family values, and the lyrical artistic views, reflecting profound Chinese philosophical thoughts.
